Groundhog Day may be inaccurate and pointless, but still fun
/As everyone knows February 2nd is Groundhog Day but almost all dismiss it as a pointless day. While the fact Punxsutawney Phil didn't see his shadow this year therefore predicting an early spring is meaningless, that doesn’t mean the day should be completely ignored.
The holiday has an auspicious beginning, but the fact it is meaningless is the best part! Almost every other holiday has significant meaning. Groundhog Day is about whether a Groundhog sees his shadow or not, there are no expectations, no chance of offending someone no matter how you celebrate. May it be privately like Michael from the office, in upper New York pulling a groundhog out a tree, sitting at home watching a classic Bill Murray comedy or completely ignoring it like most people, all forms of celebration are allowed. I am happy to tell people “Happy Groundhog Day!” all day long and everyone’s response can be a simple smile and nod. There is something nice about a day of the year that every American knows exist but can celebrate just for fun. Luckily this year, I get another fantastically meaningless day at the end of the month in Leap Day (however it does keep the Gregorian calendar accurate), but I for one need my pointless holidays more than once every four years. So to everyone have an amazing and fun Groundhog’s Day!
